Shinty Matches in Ireland 18th Century

Report

Even by the 18th Century the differences between Hurley/Hurling, also known as Summer or Leinster Hurling or Iomáiníocht in Irish, and Camán or Camánaíocht in Irish, which was played across the Northern Half of the Island of Ireland, and Shinty or Camanachd in Scottish Gaelic, which was played primarily in the Scottish Highlands, was discernible from the reports. [References: S-1 to S-2]

A game of ‘Shiney’ was played in 1779 between the local Cork Racket Court Club and the 81st Regiment. It was described as the ‘Caledonian Game’ and must be the earliest reference to a game of Shinty in Ireland. [References: S-2]

March 2022

Kingussie were already out in front of the 2022 Camanachd Association Shinty Mowi Premiership with victories over Caberfeidh (7-0), Kilmallie (2-1), and Kyles Athletic (2-0) leaving them on 6 points, one ahead of Newtonmore who had wins against Kinlochshiel (3-1) and Glasgow Mid Argyll (2-0) but were held to a 2-2 draw by Kyles Athletic.

Kinlochshiel were in third on four points following wins over Caberfeidh (2-0) and Oban Camanachd (2-0). That loss for Oban Camanachd was their first of the season following a win Glasgow Mid Argyll (3-0) and the loss was followed up with a big win versus Caberfeidh (5-1). Caberfeidh themselves had a win over Glasgow Mid Argyll (3-2) amid the big losses, and Kyles Athletic were also on two points after adding a draw with Fort William (2-2) following their earlier draw with Newtonmore as were Lovat who defeated Kilmallie 3-0 in their only league match in March. Both Glasgow Mid Argyll and Kilmallie had yet to secure a point. [References: S-1 to S-11]

About Shinty Premiership 2022

The 2022 Camanachd Association Shinty Mowi Premiership features the top 10 Shinty Clubs in Scotland (Alba in Gaelic), which were determined from the top teams in the Senior A to Senior C Regional Leagues imposed in 2021 due to Covid-19 Restrictions. These teams were Kinlochshiel, Kilmallie and Fort William (Senior A – Central); Caberfeidh, Kingussie, Lovat and Newtonmore (Senior B – North); Kyles Athletic, Oban Camanachd and Glasgow Mid Argyll (Senior C – South)

ABOUT SHINTY

Shinty is Gaelic Scotland’s traditional version of Hurling. It is one of the forgotten Gaelic, Celtic or Atlantic Games like Basque Pelota and Welsh Baseball, played mostly in Gaelic parts of Scotland like the Highlands and Islands.

The game is very similar to Hurling, with a curved stick used to hit a ball through a goal, except there is no point-over-the-bar and less play in the air. The game is 12-a-side as opposed to Hurling’s 15-a-side. It is also known as Camanachd in Scottish Gaelic.

Recap 2018-19

UCD Krakens finished fourth in the 2018-19 Irish Underwater Hockey League after an epic season-long duel with Cork / UL for third place. Having defeated Queen’s University / Belfast in Round 1 and lost to DCU / Vikings and also Dublin Otters, UCD found themselves in third place following a 1-0 victory over Cork / UL. They lost all games in Round 2, however, with the exception of the Belfast game, including a 0-1 loss to Cork / UL. which left them in fourth because Cork / UL had drawn with Otters in Round 1. Results went much the same in Round 3, with the Krakens losing all games bar a victory over Belfast. In Round 4 UCD shocked Champions-elect DCU / Vikings, winning 2-1, and drew with Cork / UL 2-2. With the other two games cancelled because Otters and Queen’s University could not compete on the day, UCD Krakens finished in fourth place, a point behind Cork / UL. / Reference: [2-6]

Recap 2018-19

Cork Underwater Hockey were paired with UL (University of Limerick) in order to compete in the 2018-19 Irish Underwater Hockey League. The Cork team, which has been in existence since at least December 2015, did well to defeat Queen’s University / Belfast in the First round and draw with Dublin Otters, an exceptionally good result for Cork. However two losses to DCU / Vikings and UCD Krakens (both by a 1-0 margin) left them in fourth place after Round 1. In Round 2 Cork / UL again defeated Belfast, but lost 0-3 to Otters and lost again to DCU / Vikings, but managed to win their final game versus UCD setting up a rivalry for third place with the Krakens. In round 3 Cork / UL again defeated Belfast and UCD but lost to DCU and Otters. The fourth round was hampered by the withdrawal of Otters and Belfast, but Cork / UL finished in third place thanks to a 2-2 draw with UCD Krakens, thus finishing a point above the Dublin University.

Recap 2018-19

Dublin Otters started the better of the five teams in the Irish Underwater Hockey League in 2018-19, winning all four of their Round 1 games bar a draw with Cork. In the second round the Otters lost 2-1 to closest rivals DCU / Vikings, but won all other games including a 3-0 triumph over Cork, leaving them in second place just two points behind DCU / Vikings going into the third round. In the third round the Otters drew 0-0 with DCU / Vikings and again won all other games setting the scene for a showdown with the Dublin City University team in the fourth and final round. However, the Otters were unable to put up a team for the finale, thus cancelling their four games. They did, however, finish second in the league.

Recap 2018-19

DCU Sea Lions / Vikings (the two teams were paired for the 2018-19 season) won the Irish Underwater Hockey League in 2018-19. They went 3-1 in their first tournament, their sole loss coming 2-0 to Dublin Otters, who led after Round 1. The Second tournament saw DCU / Vikings gain revenge over Otters with a 2-1 win as the two teams were evenly matched after Round 2. In Round 3 DCU / Vikings and Otters drew 0-0 as DCU held a slight two point advantage over their Dublin rivals going into the last Round. When Otters could not put up a team for Round 4, the title was a formality for DCU / Vikings as they lost to Cork / UL and defeated UCD Krakens to finish on 34 points, 5 ahead of Dublin Otters.
