Report
Ireland competed in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships from 2004-2013, when the lack of available home ice meant they could no longer compete. Ireland started in Division III, finishing fourth in 2004 in a five team group, behind Iceland, Turkey and Mexico, but with a big win over Armenia. In 2005, the Irish again got a good win over Armenia, but lost out to Mexico, South Africa and Luxembourg. The team managed a tie with Turkey in 2006, as well as beating Luxembourg, but again finished fourth out of five. The 2007 tournament was played on home ice in Dundalk, with Ireland picking up three wins over Luxembourg, South Africa and Montenegro on their way to finishing second behind New Zealand, and gaining promotion to Division II. Competing in Division II for the first time in 2008, Ireland struggled against stiffer competition, finishing last behind Romania, Belgium, Serbia, Israel and Bulgaria. Back in Division III for 2009, Ireland picked up a good win over Mongolia, but finished fifth out of six, with losses to New Zealand, Turkey, Luxembourg and Greece. Ireland won their first tournament in 2010, winning all three games against Greece, Luxembourg and the United Arab Emirates to again gain promotion to Division II. Division II again proved too much of a task for the Irish, with the team losing all its five games, finishing sixth of six behind Romania, Croatia, Iceland, China, Bulgaria. Returning to Division III for 2013, Ireland finished fourth of six, with wins over Greece and Mongolia, but losing to Turkey, North Korea and Luxembourg. A similar result happened in 2013, with two wins for the Irish over Greece and the United Arab Emirates, but losses to South Africa, North Korea and Luxembourg meaning the team finished fourth of six. Ireland could no longer compete after 2013 due to the lack of home ice, and it wasn’t until 2017 that the Irish National team again entered IIHF competition. |
