Emmett Waldron – Player – Scottish Claymores 1996-1999 (Born in Cork):

Emmett Waldron was born in Cork and played NCAA football for Rice University before signing for the Scottish Claymores in 1996 – the same year as Scottish Rugby Union captain Gavin Hastings. His father was an Irish Rugby Interprovincial player. In his first year at the Claymores he would have earned £25,000 as well as bonuses and travelling expenses. He played four years for the Claymores as a linebacker. He was the first Irish player to play professional American Football in the NFL in a skilled position since the 1920s .[20]

Jeff Reinebold – Coach – Rhein Fire 1995, 2000, Amsterdam Admirals 2001, NFL Europe Senior Management 2004 (Coached Irish Coaches and Players at a Clinic in Dublin in 2010)

Jeff Reinebold’s Connections to Ireland include coaching Irish coaches abnd players at a clinicc in Dublin from 19th-21st July 2010. He was born in South Bend, Indiana, where the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are based. He began his coaching in Western Montana College in 1981 at 24 years of age.

In 1995 he coached at Rhein Fire in the World League of American Football. He returned to the Rhein Fire in the rebranded National Football League Europe in 2000 as Special Teams Co-Ordinator and Defensive Backs Coach, winning the world Bowl that year.

In 2001 he moved to the Amsterdam Admirals as Defensive Back Coach, and Special Teams Co-Ordinator. In 2004 he became the NFL Europe League’s Senior Manager of International Player Development, before returning to the Canadian Football League to coach.

While he was coaching in Europe, 11 of the Defensive Backs he coached ended up on NFL rosters.

Report

The American Bowl, played in Europe from 1986-1997, was the first NFL attempt at promoting the game on the continent. It followed on from regular weekly highlight broadcasts on National TV, and featured Pre-Season games between NFL teams. Matches were played in London, Berlin, Barcelona and Dublin, with the NFL focussing on promoting the World League of American Football / NFL Europe League from 1995 onwards, with the Pittsburgh Steelers v Chicago Bears game in Dublin in 1997, being the last in Europe (a 30-17 win for the Steelers). The American Bowl continued to be held in Tokyo, Mexico City & Sydney from the mid-1990s onwards.

Report

The United States Armed Forces in Europe played an American Football League from 1946-1993, with personnel staioned in Nuclear Air Force Bases in the United Kingdom, Germany & Mediterranean. There were three conferences: United Kingdom Sports Conference, Continental Sports Conference & Mediterranean Sports Conference. Although the MSC was a competitive Conference the USAFE Championship game was on all but three occasions between the winners of the UKSC & CSC.[11]

UKSC teams were: Alconbury Spartans, Bentwaters Phantoms, Burtonwood Bullets, Chicksands Fighting Chicks, Fairford Falcons, Greenham Common Crusaders (Pirates until 1988), High Wycombe Bucks, London Rockets, Mildenhall Marauders, Upper Heyford Sky Kings, Wethersfield Raiders.

Burtonwood Bullets, Wethersfield Raiders & Alconbury Spartans played matches in Ravenhill, Belfast & Croke Park, Dublin in aid of the Irish Red Cross in the 1950s & 1960s. Lakenheath Eagles played a game against Dublin Celts in the 1980s. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]
