Report

_______________________________________________________

The Irish International Jugger Tournament was held in Wanderers RFC in Dublin over the weekend of 20th and 21st August 2016 to Celebrate 10 Years of Jugger in Ireland. [2]

Teams representing Ireland, Germany, Spain, Australia, Canada & USA entered the Tournament which was won by JuggerMeister of Madrid in Spain. Dublin’s Setanta finished third. [1]

Ranking Points: 20

About

Jugger is like a cross between American Football and Medieval Combat. It is a team Sport where the objective is to get a skull from the middle of the field into a zone at the opposing teams end. There are five players on each team, four of whom are paired off fightning each other with padded weapons such as swords.

When a player is ‘killed’ in these fights he has to kneel down and is out of the game for that particular round. The Fifth person is the Qwick. His job is to get the skull from the middle of the field past the opposing Qwick into a zone at their opponents endzone. He can only advance the skull once the other teams fighters are all dead. The team which scores the most skull touchdowns is the winner.

Report

________________________________________________________

Irish Lacrosse dates back to the 19th Century when the first leagues were played, with teams mostly in the Belfast area. It died out around the First World War and Michael Kennedy writing in the History of Irish Lacrosse has speculated it may have been due to the number of players called up to serve in the Army and also possibly due to the rise of the GAA and Irish Nationalism – Lacrosse would have drawn most of its players from the Protestant Upper Class.

From 1930-1970 an Irish Ladies Lacrosse Association played international fixtures with England, Scotland and Wales and ran a School Challenge competition.

The third phase of Irish Lacrosse began after the millennium, with interest sparked by a certain American Comedy Film.

The Irish Lacrosse League started in 2009-10, with UCD the first winners, and repeating the feat in 2010-11. Dublin Bay Prawns won the league in 2011-12, before UCD Unicorns won back the title in 2012-13.

From 2015 the league would become a spring league with the Newtownards Cup played as a pre-season Cup over Autumn in order to facilitate the entry of newer players. Dublin Bay Prawns would win the title that year and Dublin Lacrosse Club would finally get their hands on the title in 2016.

The first chapter in the re-emergence of Lacrosse in Ireland ends there as the two non-University teams merged for the 2017 season and in 2018 became Railway Union Lacrosse Club as they played in the famous Hockey and Cricket grounds in Sandymount.

Report

The Ice Hockey Superleague was the top level Ice Hockey League in Britain and Ireland prior to the formation of the Elite Ice Hockey League in 2003.

The Belfast Giants were created in 2000 as part of the peace process with aid of American money and played in the 5000-seat Oddyssey Arena.

In their first season they finished sixth, but failed to qualify out of their playoff group. In 2001-02 they won the League on 70 Points, 21 ahead of their nearest challengers Ayr Scottish Eagles, but again failed to qualify out of the Playoff Group. They finished second in the League in 2002-03, one point behind Sheffield Steelers, but won the Playoff Group before going on to win the Final 5-3 against the London Knights.
