Report

Pembroke Wanderers won the Leinster Hockey Association Leinster Division One Men’s title six times from 1990-91 to 1999-2000. After finishing third behind Champions Avoca and second placed Three Rock Rovers in 1990-91, they then won the title ahead of Avoca on goal difference in 1991-92. Division One was expanded from 8 to 10 teams in 1992-93 and again Avoca were Champions, before finishing runners-up four seasons running from 1993-94 to 1996-97. Pembroke Wanderers were Champions three times during that span, with only Three Rock Rovers in 1995-96 interrupting it. Pembroke went on to win two more Division One titles in 1997-98 and 1998-99 making five Championships in six years before Glenanne won the title in 1999-2000.

About

The World Hockey Association of 1972-1979 was a Major League rival to the National Hockey League. Three of the Leagues’ Champions – Winnipeg Jets 1975-76, 1977-78, 1978-79; New England Whalers 1972-73; and Quebec Nordiques 1976-1977 – joined the National Hockey League after the merger between the two Leagues in 1979. All three teams have since moved. The only other team to have won the AVCO World Trophy – the Houston Aeros – folded after the 1977-78 season.

The only other team to join the NHL after the merger – the Edmonton Oilers – is the only one still in its original hometown, and although the only one of the four to not have won the AVCO World Trophy, is the only one to have won the NHL’s Stanley Cup.

Proposed American Football League in USSR 1979

In 1979 American Promoter Tom Kelly, proposed to introduce American Football to the USSR, begiinning with a demonstration match involving Professional American teams and following this the creation of a dozen or two dozen teams in the Soviet Union. The State Functionaries, however, did not approve of the plan, and it was not until 1989, with the Glasnost Era, that the first matches were played, with a demonstration match by two College teams, the “Stars” and the “Bummers”. [1]

The first Russian American Football Championship then took place in 1992, however due to insufficent numbers as well as presumably the large distances involved in a National League, it was not until 2002 that it was again played, and has been played since. [2]
