Report

The Men’s Challenge Trophy was the European Handball Federations competition for emerging Nations. Having competed with club sides & countries like Greenland in the mid-1990s, Ireland entered this competition for the first time in 1999.

In Ireland’s second time entering the competition in 2001, they found the task even harder than in 1999, with newly independent countries like Estonia & Latvia, where the sport has been played for decades, dominating.

Ireland and Malta (the only team they beat in 1999) were outclassed by the more established emerging nations, and again met in the last placement match, where this tome Malta won 32-21, leaving Ireland with a record of 5 losses from 5 matches.

About

Olympic Handball, sometimes called Team Handball or European Handball, is a team sport similar to Indoor Soccer or Futsal, except hands are used rather than feet.

The object of the sport is to pass the ball using only the hands in order to get into a semi-circle around the opposing teams goal, where a shot may be taken. Each score counts as one goal, and the court is the exact same as a Futsal court indeed Futsal was invented as an Indoor version of Soccer, using the Olympic Handball court.

The sport was invented in Germany & Northern Europe at the end of the 19th Century & beginning of the 20th Century.

Report

Olympic Handball, also known as Team Handball, or European Handball,  is a team sport invented in Northern Europe around the early 1900s. It is similar to Water Polo, whereby players try to throw a ball with their hands into a goal at either end. It is played indoors on the same court as a Futsal court, with the same markings.

Players aren’t allowed run with the ball but on receiving it have to pass it to a team-mate. The goal is to get into a semi-circle around the opposing team’s goal where the attacking player can make a shot.

Dublin International, based in Blanchardstown, won the double in 2011-2012, defeating surprise team DCU in the Final after winning the League, but were shocked the following season, 35-31, in the Final by Ballinteer’s Astra.

Astra would win the League in 2013-2014, but Dublin International would win the Final, repeating as winners the next year, 37-31 over UCD, after Astra had won the League only to be shocked by UCD in the Semi-Finals.

The 2015-16 season would see Dublin International win the double, again defeating UCD in the Final, on a scoreline of 27-21. Dublin City Handball would finally get their hands on the Trophy in 2016-17, winning the double by beating Astra 26-18 in the Final. After winning the League again in 2017-18, Dublin City would fall short in the Final, losing 28-26 to Dublin International, the old guard winning back the Trophy they had won every second year since 2012.

Report

Regular Season

Defending Champions Dublin City won the regular season dropping only one match to Dublin International at the start of the season. also qualifying for the semi-finals were Dublin International, newcomers Dublin Wings, and Astra, who put up a good new year’s run. [2][3]

Semi-Finals

Dublin City 30 Astra 26: Astra’s good post-new year run ended in the playoffs as time ran out as they closed in on the defending champions, losing in the end by a narrow four-goal margin.[3]

Dublin International 41 Dublin Wings 30: Experience told over youth as the league’s newcomers were no match for Dublin International, who pulled away from a 19-18 halftime lead to win comfortably.[3]

Final

Dublin City 26 Dublin International 28: Dublin International returned to dominance in the IOHA Men’s league after missing out on the Final in 2017. Despite a strong performance from Dublin City, and home-court advantage in DCU, they failed to prevent Dublin International bringing the title back to Phibblestown, where it has an almost permanent place. The final scoreline was extremely close, ending 28-26 in DIHC’s favour.[4]
