Note 2: Brooklyn Dodgers left the League to join the AAFC in 1945 and in 1946 the AAFC merged with the NFL, although in reality what happened was the NFL took over its three most successful franchises: Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. The Brooklyn franchise was replaced by other New York teams, which changed year on year, most called New York Yanks. Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings were expansion franchises in 1960 and 1961 respectively.

National Football League Championship Games 1933-1966 [Ref: 1]

Report

The National Football League played its first Championship Game in 1933, the first year the League was divided in to Eastern and Western Divisions. In 1960 the American Football League, one of many to use that name, became so successful, it forced a merger with the NFl, with the two League playing the first Super Bowl between their respective Champions in January 1967 (1966 season). These Leagues merged in 1970 to form the AFC and NFC (Conferences within the NFL) which continue to play the Super Bowl between them.

The most successful teams during the NFL Championship Era (1933 to 1966) were the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears with six wins each, followed by the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns with four and Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants with three.

National Football League Super Bowl 1967-Present [Ref: 1-2]

Report

Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots have been the most successful NFL teams in the Super Bowl Era (1967 to Present) with each winning the coveted prize six times. San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys have each won it five times, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants four times each and Las Vegas/Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos have each won it three times.

While there were Irish-born players playing in the NFL at the time, none has ever appeared in the Super Bowl.

Terry Kelly “Superfan” Irish Major League Ice Hockey Director 1991-2015

Terry Kelly “Superfan” [Ref: 5]

Report

Terry Kelly was born in Toronto to Irish Immigrant parents, but was sent back to Belfast at the age of 3 to be brought up by his grandparents. After attending St. Malachy’s in Belfast, he returned to his parents in St. John, New Brunswick. He went on a hitch-hiking trip to Canada in 1949, where, on a lark, in Montreal he took in a professional Ice Hockey, Canadian Football, and Baseball games within 24 hours. He continued on to study at the University of New Brunswick in Canada, where he graduated with a law degree at 21, was called to the Ontario bar at 22, and became Queen’s Counsel at 33.

As well as a successful law practice, which included drug prosecutions, he continued as a sports fan, attending 11 consecutive Soccer World Cups (1996 to 2006) and many Ice Hockey, Baseball and Canadian Football matches, in Canada, as well as Scotland, Mexico City. He also played for the Soccer team at the University of New Brunswick.

One of his greatest achievements was to replace the Hambly Arena in Oshawa, Ontario, which had burnt down in 1953. He raised $1.3 Million in 1964 to replace it. The Civic Arena in Oshawa was named “Terry Kelly” Stadium in his honour. He was President of the Oshawa Soccer Association from 1963 to 1967 and was also a founding director of the Oshawa Green Gaels Lacrosse Club and a founder of the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame into which he inducted in 1995.

Terry Kelly was named director of the Toronto Maple Leafs National Hockey League team (one of the biggest sporting organisations in the World) in 1991. He died, aged 83 from heart failure in 2015.

Report

After a number of seasons as a Northern and Southern Junior Two-Touch League, the Junior Gridiron League became a National Flag Footbal League in 1995 with two sections: Youth (9-15 year olds) and Junior (14-18 year olds). This followed from the successful introduction of Flag Football to the JGL Junior League in 1994.

The Junior Flag Football League was won by the Doncaster Wildcats, who shocked the Brighton B-52s in the National JGL Bowl 20-0. The B-52s managed to shut out the Wildcats in a spirited second-half display, but the damage was done in the first half, when Doncaster scored three touchdowns without reply.

Doncaster ran in a 42 yard TD to open the scoring in the first quarter, and then added two converted touchdowns to lead 20-0 at the half, which was how it stayed until the end of the game.

Barry Winter then replied for the Commodores on a 63 yard pass on a halfback option, with Andrew Wilcock dodging several tackles on his way to the endzone. Winter, who was voted MVP, then scored on a two yard run to seal victory for the Devon club. Winter even kicked the extra point as he put in a special all-round display.
