Report

After years playing in Austrian Lower Divisions there were enough Slovenian American Football teams in 2010 to form their own American Football League – the ZANS Zveza za Ameriski Nogomet Slovenije – which featured four teams: Ljubljana Silverhawks (the Champions), Maribor Generals, Kranj Alp Devils and Celje Gold Diggers. Ljubljana Silverhawks defeated Alp Devils 41-0 in Slo Bowl I. Celje pulled out in 2011 and the three remaining teams were joined by Zagreb Thunder and Zagreb Raiders from Croatia. Again the League was won by the Silverhawks 29-19 over Zagreb Thunder. In 2012 the two Croatian teams joined with other Croatian teams to form their own league and the ZANS was again down to three teams, although the Croatian teams played a half-schedule against the Slovenian teams, The Slo Bowl was won again in 2012 and 2013 by Ljubljana Silverhawks, Slo Bowl III 23-10 over Maribor Generals and then in Slo Bowl IV 45-0 against the same team. The ZANS League ceased operations after that year with the teams concentrating on playing in the Alpe-Adria Football League. It was resurrected in 2017.

Report

The SAFSrbija – Serbian American Football League was inaugurated in 2004, playing what appears to have been unkitted contact American Football. Kragujevac Wildboars defeated Beograd Vukovi (Wolves) 21-6 in Serbian Bowl I (also possibly known as American Bowl I). The 2005 season saw an expansion to 10 teams, necessitating a two-phase league, with teams divided into three groups, followed by a second phase whereby the top team in each group played a further match against the other (Group 1-3) as did the 4 to 6 Group and 7-10 Group. The deciding match in Group 1-3 was the Final match won 20-7 by Vukovi over Wild Boars.

In 2006 the top teams Kragujevac Wild Boars, Beograd Vukovi, Sirmium Legionaires and Novi Sad Dukes all left SAFSrbija to join the Central European Football League (also known as the South East League of American Football) which was fully kitted, helmet and pads Football, featuring teams from Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Serbia, and Romania. That year SAFSrbija played a two-division set-up with the Northern (Sever) Champions Klek Knights defeating Southern (Jug) Champions Kraljevo Royal Crowns 16-7 in Serbian Bowl II. For 2007 the SAFSrbija League was divided between a fully kitted helmets and pads league and an unkitted contact league, with a Playoff between the top two teams in the SAFSrbija League and the top two teams in SELAF (CAFL) for the National Championship of Serbia (see following years).

Of note to Irish readers is the presence of two teams named after Celts: the Jagodina Red Celts (also translated as Strawberry Celts) and Sombor Celtis. Sombor played one season in 2006 finishing with a 2-2 record, losing 20-7 in the Semi-Finals to eventual winners Klek Knights. Jagodina Red Celts played in 2005 and 2006 in the unkitted divisions, losing all games both seasons and then in 2007 joining the fully-kitted division (see following years).

Four teams entered: Prague Panthers, Brno Alligators, Prague Lions and Ostrava Cobras. Prague Panthers finished the season 6-0 claiming the CAAF Championship. In 1995 Ostrava Cobras were replaced by Ostrava Eagles, otherwise it was the same four teams with Prague Panthers again emerging victorious in the Czech Bowl by a score of 52-22 over Prague Lions. In 1996 there was yet another team in Ostrava, the Steelers, and this time they got the mix right going all the way to Czech Bowl III where they were defeated by the Prague Panthers, who won their third Championship in as many years 48-30. The league nearly doubled in size that year with the addition of Pribram Rams, Havirov Vikings and Pilsen Bulldogs, all of whom failed to make the playoffs. The Vikings were replaced in 1997 by the Havirov Devils and the Pilsen team folded, replaced in the league by Bratislava Monarchs from Slovakia. The league was divided into East (Vychod) and West (Zapad) Divisions. Ostrava Steelers went one better that year triumphing 35-21 against Prague Panthers in Czech Bowl IV.

There was a new team back in Pilsen, the Tornadoes in 1998, replacing Pribram Rams, and the Prague Lions became the third team to win the Czech Bowl after shocking Ostrava Steelers in the Semi-Finals and then Prague Panthers 29-8 in Czech Bowl V. In 1999 Pribram Rams returned bringing the CAAF league up to 8 teams. Prague Panthers won back the Czech Bowl, 38-0 over Prague Lions. With some big mismatches (Lions defeating Rams 101-0 and Tornadoes 56-0; Monarchs defeating Tornadoes 59-0 and Rams 82-0; Alligators winning 66-0 against Tornadoes) and the resulting forfeits by the Rams and Havirov Devils towards the end of the season the league was split into Divisions A and B respectively for the stronger and weaker teams in 2000.

Global Football Kilimanjaro Bowl 2011

Global Football Logo [Refeences: 1]

Arusha, Africa – 21 May 2011 – Drake Bulldogs (USA) 17 CONADEIP All-Stars (Mexico) 7 – A fourth Quarter comeback by Drake University Bulldogs (USA) delighted a 12,000 strong Tanzanian crowd at the very first College American Football game in Africa on 21 May 2011. The Global Kilimanjaro Bowl, organized by Global Football, played at the Sheik Amri Abedi Memorial Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania. After Billy Janssen scored the first historic points in the first half with a 27 yard Field Goal for the Bulldogs, the CONADEIP All-Stars, from the Private Colleges League in Mexico went ahead in the third quarter when Jose Reyes, who had severely damaged the Drake University defense with 124 yards rushing, went in from 5 yards out. Trailing 7-3 in the Final Quarter, the Bulldogs sent in Back-Up Quarterback Nick Ens who completed an 8 yard Touchdown pass to Joey Orlando to put the Bulldogs back in front, then, also in the final quarter, linebacker Patrick Cashmore recovered a fumble on the 8 yard line, running in for a TD to make the Final score 17-7 to Drake after the successful Point After Touchdown kick. Following the game, on the 25th May, players from both gteams climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain at 19,341 ft, in the nearby Tanzania National Park. The event held was to raise funds for an orphanage in Tanzania [References: 2]. Ireland’s Glenn Baker, from near Athlone, Co. Roscommon, and originally Cork, had previously done that feat, in 2007, raising £4,000 for Charity while at Mount Ida Mustangs on a College Football Scholarship. [References: 3]

About Arena Indoor Football

Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulties  in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred.

There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football and Indoor Football is that there are Rebound Nets in Arena Football either side of the goalposts, allowing the ball to return into play, which are not present in Indoor Football.

Report – General

A total of 32 teams played in Major Rival Football Leagues to the National Football League in 2020. With the Canadian Football League cancelling the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic, it was left to the XFL, Liga de Futbol Americano Mexico, The Spring League and Liga Xtrema de Futbol Arena Mexico to compete with the NFL. Only The Spring League, however, would complete its two seasons, the Spring season in Las Vegas with only three teams playing a total of two matches each, won by Las Vegas Hughes, and the Fall Season, in San Antonio, with the only Championship game played: Generals triumphing 37-14 over Aviators. LEXFA Mexico only completed its short Spring Season, and cancelled its full-length Fall season, and both the XFL and LFA Mexico abandoned their seasons after five weeks of a 10 week season.

Report – XFL 2020

XFL Logo [References: 11]

The XFL continued to play behind closed doors through the coronavirus outbreak, which stopped a lot of sports leagues. It finally shut up shop on March 12 after a Seattle Dragons player had tested positive for coronavirus, after the game with Houston Roughnecks on March 7. This player had also participated in the February 29th game against St. Louis Battlehawks, and so all players and teams were alerted and the league stopped. A decision was made by Oliver Luck, XFL Commissioner to cancel the rest of the season. [Ref: 7-8]

At the time there was a three-way tie at the top of the Eastern Division, with DC Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and New York Guardians all on 3-2. In the West, Houston Roughnecks (5-0) had a clear lead over the teams in joint second, Dallas Renegades and Los Angeles Wildcats (both 2-3). It also did better than the Alliance of American Football in drawing fans to a AAA Football League. The XFL averaged about 18,600 fans a game, whereas its predecessor, the AAF averaged about 15,000 during its one season in 2019. [Ref: 10][References: 4-11]

The League was suspended after week 5 due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, with Condors CDMX two games ahead of CDMX Mexicas and Artilleros de Puebla on a 4-1 record in Division Norte, and Raptors de Edomex, chasing their first ever League title, on 4-1 also in Division Centro, one game ahead of Dinos de Saltillo and Fundidores de Monterrey. In the opening Week in The Spring League 2020 in San Antonio Alphas lost 0-19 to Blues with QB Shea Patterson throwing for 3 TDs, two of which went to Jovon Durante Cinco. Aviators defeated Jousters 28-0 as DeShaun Amos twice intercepted the ball, returning one for a TD and QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson passed for 2 TDs. The win moved the Aviators to 2-0 as the Blues fell to 1-1. QB JT Barret led the Alphas to their first win of the season as they beat the Conquerors 22-17, dropping the conquerors to 0-2. In the other game, Jousters Kicker Ricky Aguayo had a perfect 5/5 night as the Generals came from behind in the fourth quarter, allowing no Touchdowns in the game and forcing two turnovers in the fourth quarter, leading them to an 18-15 victory as they moved to 2-0 in the standings, and the Jousters dropped to 0-2.

In the third week the Conquerors shocked the Aviators with a 42-19 victory against the undefeated team, giving the Conquerors their first win of the season. The Jousters forfeited their match against the Alphas, due to COVID-19 testing and protocols, and also lack of practice. Alphas were awarded a 2-0 win as per league rules. Quarterback Bryan Scott, led the Generals to the only team undefeated on 3-0 with four Touchdowns and was matched by his own defence who contributed four interceptions as the Generals downed the Blues 42-28 to claim sole ownership of the top spot.

On 17 November 2020, The Spring League made the announcement to cancel the matches for Week 4 due to positive COVID-19 tests. The Championship Game was postponed until 15 December 2020 where the Generals totally dominated the Aviators winning 37-14, with QB Bryan Scott named MVP. [References: 15-34]
