Report

As well as playing in the European League – Continental Conference in 1993 as the Euro Spartans, Terry Smith’s Manchester Spartans organised the European League – UK Conference. Teams were named after NFL teams, but the prefix Euro- added to avoid confusion. All matches were played at Leicester’s Saffron Lane Stadium.

While the Spartans themselves didn’t play in the League, there were four teams: EuroSteelers, EuroRaiders, EuroBears and EuroMonarchs, the last one named after the London Monarchs, who had played in the World League of American Football – a AAA Development League of the NFL – from 1991 to 1992 (and would again play in 1995 when the League returned as a Europe-only league.

The UK Conference had a unusual format – the four teams played a two-game schedule with all four teams qualifying for the playoffs, rather than a 3-game schedule followed by a Final. The EuroSteelers had finished top of the Standings with two wins from two, but lost to the EuroBears (who had lost both matches in the regular season) in the Semi-Finals. The EuroBears then went on to claim the Championship with a 14-12 victory over the EuroRaiders in the Final.

About

Jugger is like a cross between American Football and Medieval Combat. It is a team Sport where the objective is to get a skull from the middle of the field into a zone at the opposing teams end. There are five players on each team, four of whom are paired off fightning each other with padded weapons such as swords.

When a player is ‘killed’ in these fights he has to kneel down and is out of the game for that particular round. The Fifth person is the Qwick. His job is to get the skull from the middle of the field past the opposing Qwick into a zone at their opponents endzone. He can only advance the skull once the other teams fighters are all dead. The team which scores the most skull touchdowns is the winner.

About

Shinty is Gaelic Scotland’s traditional version of Hurling. It is one of the forgotten Gaelic, Celtic or Atlantic Games like Basque Pelota and Welsh Baseball, played mostly in Gaelic parts of Scotland like the Highlands and Islands.

The game is very similar to Hurling, with a curved stick used to hit a ball through a goal, except there is no point-over-the-bar and less play in the air. The game is 12-a-side as opposed to Hurling’s 15-a-side.

Report

In 2013 the Premier League underwent a rebranding as the Premiership, and Newtownmore won the title from 2013-2016, before Kinlochshiel ended their streak in 2017. Newtownmore won the title back in 2018.

About

The Northern Ireland Inline Hockey Association Gold League was the top level Inline Hockey League in Northern Ireland from 2011 to 2015. It replaced the Northern Ireland Inline Hockey League Senior League in 2011 and in turn merged with the Republic of Ireland League in 2015 to form the Inline Hockey Ireland Elite League.

The winners of the competition went forward to an All-Ireland Championship involving the winners of the Republic of Ireland League.
