Report
The XFL continued to play behind closed doors through the coronavirus outbreak, which stopped a lot of sports leagues. It finally shut up shop on March 12 after a Seattle Dragons player had tested positive for coronavirus, after the game with Houston Roughnecks on March 7. This player had also participated in the February 29th game against St. Louis Battlehawks, and so all players and teams were alerted and the league stopped. A decision was made by Oliver Luck, XFL Commissioner to cancel the rest of the season. [Ref: 4-5]
At the time there was a three-way tie at the top of the Eastern Division, with DC Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and New York Guardians all on 3-2. In the West, Houston Roughnecks (5-0) had a clear lead over the teams in joint second, Dallas Renegades and Los Angeles Wildcats (both 2-3). It also did better than the Alliance of American Football in drawing fans to a AAA Football League. The XFL averaged about 18,600 fans a game, whereas its predecessor, the AAF averaged about 15,000 during its one season in 2019. [Ref: 7]
About
The XFL 2020 is the second incarnation of Vince McMahon’s rival Pro Football League to the National Football League and Canadian Football League.
He started the original XFL in 2001 after being refused a license for a CFL team, and sought to bring Football back to its Hard-Working Class roots. At the time the NFL was starting to cut down on touchdown celebrations and bring in more laws protecting the quarterback, and was called the “No Fun League” by its detractors. Vince McMahon named all of the teams in the original XFL after criminals or extreme mental illnesses, and brought in hard-hitting rules, that aimed to bring the hard-nosed element among the working classes back into the game, by making it more like the Football of a century previously.
The original XFL, however, failed to bring in an audience, as it was seen as deviating too much from the standard rules of football. [Ref: 7]
This version of the XFL promises closer rules to the NFL, and has still used extreme names, just not criminal, or mentally ill.
While it positions itself as a Major League rival to the NFL & CFL, it can be thought of as more of a AAA Football League.
