In 1976 the National Football League expanded to 28 teams with the addition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks. In between this expansion and the relocation of the St. Louis Cardinals to Phoenix, Arizona in 1988, two Irish-born players, Neil O’Donoghue from Dublin, and John Sinnott from Wexford played in the National Football League. O’Donoghue was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1977, and went on to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1978 to 1979 and St. Louis Cardinals from 1980 to 1985. Sinnott was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1978, but cut from the roster in Training Camp, and picked up by the New York Giants, where he was on the Roster from 1980 to 1981, before playing for the Baltimore Colts in 1982.

The Standings and Playoff Results of the NFL (1976-1987) are followed by the Career Statistics and Biographies of the two Irish-born Players in this period, as well as a Video Highlights reel of Neil O’Donoghue playing for the Cardinals and Buccaneers.

Neil O’Donoghue (Buffalo Bills 1977; Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1978-1979; St. Louis Cardinals 1980-1985)

Factfile

O’Donoghue, Cornelius Joseph Dennis

Height: 6’6″ Weight: 210lb

Born: 18 June 1953, Dublin, Ireland

High School:

National Amateur: Dublin Minors [GAA Football][1970]

Semi-Pro: Shamrock Rovers[Soccer][1971-72][1972-73][1973-74]

College: St. Bernard College, Auburn [Soccer 1974] Auburn Tigers [1975][1976]

Pro Football: Buffalo Bills [1977] Tampa Bay Buccaneers [1978][[1979] St. Louis Cardinals [1980][1981][1982][1983][1984][1985]

Draft: 5th Round (127th Overall) 1977 Buffalo Bills

Honours: All-American (Auburn 1976).

Biography

Neil O’Donoghue was born in Dublin in 1953 and grew up in Clondalkin, where at the age of 12 he started playing Gaelic Football (GAA) where he excelled, being selected for the Dublin Minor Team which reached the All Ireland Final in 1970, losing to Cork. He switched codes to Soccer, scoring on his debut for Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland when he was 18. He played 16 games for Rovers, scoring two goals, and gaining a soccer Scholarship to St. Bernard’s College, in Alabama, the first Irishman ever to gain a Soccer Scholarship to the USA.

After the College Soccer Programme closed down he transfered to Auburn University, winning the starting Kicker position for the Tigers. In 1976 he won All-American Honours for Auburn, who play in the SEC (South Eastern Conference – traditionally the best in US College Football). He was drafted to the NFL (National Football League) in 1977 by the Buffalo Bills, playing five games before being cut from the roster and picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played two year, turning around a 2-26 record in the first two years of the expansion franchise to a 15-17 record.

He then signed for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980, where he managed to set the record for points scored in a season for the team which stood for 21 years, but will probably be best remembered by the Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals) fans for lacking clutch kicking skills, most notably missing three Field Goals in a Playoff match against the New York Giants in 1983, including a 19-yard attempt in overtime which would have won the game for St. Louis. On the last day of the season in 1984 he missed what would have been a game-winning Field Goal in the dying seconds which would have secured a Playoff place. After the 1985 season he retired. He continued to play Senior Football Championship Football for Round Towers GAA in Clondalkin during the NFL off-season.

His High School Football Coach told hm that he might get injured in his first few weeks playing Football, so he should not concentrate on just Football, as his College Academic Achievement was as important, something which is not all that common these days. [Reference: 2] While at Brown, he played in the most successful Brown University Football Team in 50 years, in 1976 emulating the Iron Men of 1926 in winning their first Ivy League Chamoionship in half a century. [Reference: 8]

Report

1995 saw large-scale change in the National Football League. Debutants Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars played in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, to open the Preseason, with the Panthers winning the battle of expansion franchises 20-14. The two Los Angeles teams also embarked for new patstures: the Rams to St. Louis and the Raiders back to Oakland. Two American Bowls were played that year – Buffalo Bills defeating Dallas Cowboys 9-7 in Toronto, Canada, and Denver Broncos winning 24-10 in Tokyo, Japan against San Francisco 49ers.

Elsewhere the Houston Oilers, a year before they left for Tennessee, played two preseason home games outside Houston: versus Washington Redskins in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Dallas Cowboys in San Antonio, Texas, losing both. Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers also played a game in Orlando, Florida, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning, while the New England Patriots lost a ‘home’ game in Stanford, California to the Oakland Raiders, and the New York Jets similarly lost a home game versus Philadelphia Eagles at Jackson, Mississippi. Preseason Division Champions were Indianapolis Colts (3-1, AFC East), Cleveland Browns (2-2, AFC Central), Kansas City Chiefs (3-1, AFC West), Philadelphia Eagles (4-0, NFC East), Detroit Lions (3-1, NFC Central), and Carolina Panthers (3-2, NFC West). Only the Kansas City Chiefs went on to win their Division durling the Regular Season.

Report

The National Football League Preseason of 1986 featured the American Bowl ’86 in London, England, where the Chicago Bears defeated the Dallas Cowboys 17-6. The Preseason, as usual, opened with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, where the New England Patriots won a tight game 21-16 against the St. Louis Cardinals. After four more weeks of games, Preseason Division titles went to New England Patriots (4-1, AFC East), Cleveland Browns (4-0, AFC Central), San Diego Chargers (3-1, AFC West), New York Giants (3-1, NFC East), Chicago Bears (4-1, NFC Central), and Atlanta Falcons (2-2, NFC West). Four of these teams went on to win their Regular Season Division title, only the San Diego Chargers (who lost out to the Denver Broncos) and Atlanta Falcons who lost out to San Francisco 49ers, failed to translate Preseason form into Regular Season Championships.

Report

There were numerous AAA Leagues in US American Football from 1961 to 1985, some of which styled themselves as Major League rivals to the NFL, most notably the United States Football League of 1983 to 1985 and the World Football League of 1974 to 1975.

The winners of the United Football League (1961 to 1964) were Grand Rapids Shamrocks (1961), Wheeling Ironmen (1962, 1963) and Canton Bulldogs (1964). The Continental Football League (1965 to 1969), which featured Co. Offaly-born Tom Furlong, Champions were Charleston Rockets (1965), Philadelphia Bulldogs (1966), Orlando Panthers (1967, 1968) and Indianapolis Capitols (1969).

In the 1972 the Southwestern Pro Football League (SWFL) began to market to the Mexican populations of Texas, California and the SouthWest. It lasted two seasons. Champions were San Antonio Toros (Bulls) (1972) and Oklahoma City Wranglers (1973). the World Football Legue which replaced it attempted to promote American Football to the World, although it got no further than Hawaii. Dublin-born Adrian Young played for the Hawaiians. The League lasted one and a half seasons before folding, with Birmingham Americans the Champions in 1974.

The American Football Association too up the mantle of AAA Football League in 1977, with its Champions being San Antonio Charros (1977), Shreveport Steamers (1978), Carolina Chargers (1979), West Virginia Rockets (1980, 1981), Carolina Storm (1982, 1983). It ended because of the arrival of the United States Football League, a Major Spring League rival to the NFL with a huge budget, including later US President and Billionaire Donald Trump among its team owners. The Champions were Michigan Panthers (1983), Philadelphia Stars (1984) and Baltimore Stars (1985).

After this the AAA Market was taken up by the Arena Football League (1985 to 2019), the World League of American Football / NFL Europe (1991 to 2007) and the XFL Era Leagues (2001 to Present).

Report

From 1926 to 1949 there were numerous Leagues which styled themselves as Major League Rivals to the National Football League. Most of these Leagues called themselves the “American Football League” and were based in two or three regions of the USA. Only the All-American Football Conference of 1946 to 1949 was countrywide with teams in the East, MidWest, South and West.

What is most notable about these Leagues from the point of view of NFL fans is that the Los Angeles Rams (then based in Cleveland), Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers all started in one of these Leagues before joining the NFL. The NFl (or AFL of the 1960ss which merged with the NFL) reused some of the team names (Baltimore Colts, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals).

Winners of these Leagues were: Philadelphia Quakers (1926), St. Louis / Kansas City Blues (1934), Boston Shamrocks (1936), Los Angeles Bulldogs (1937, 1939), East Chicago Indians (1938), Columbus Bullies (1940-1941), Hollywood Rangers (1944) and Cleveland Browns (1946-1949).

There was also a AAA League on the West Coast of America during the 1940s, booming because of the amount of soldiers stationed there during WWII. Winners of this League were: Los Angeles Bulldogs (1940. 1946), Hollywood Bears (1941, 1945), San Diego Bombers (1942-1944), Hawaiian Warriors (1947, 1948).

The first attempt at taking advantage of West Coast appetite for American Football was the California Winter League of 1927 to 1928 when NFL and AFL teams toured the Pacific Coast arranging matches against teams in California, with League Champions being Los Angeles Buccaneers (1927) and New York Yankees (1928).

Note: + No Official Standings kept in 1920. * Chicago Bears won Playoff against Portsmouth Spartans 9-0 after both teams finished tied at the top with 6 wins and 1 loss.

Note 2: Chicago Staleys are considered the same team as the Chicago Bears by the NFL. The Bears owner bought out the Decatur Staleys franchise in 1921 and moved them to Chicago, but the owner of the Staleys paid the new owner to keep the name Staleys for one year, after which they became the Chicago Bears.

Note 3: Ties were discounted in calculating W-L Winning Percentages at the time.

Report

The American Professional Football association was formed in late 1919 by the leading teams in the Ohio League (then the most pre-eminent Pro Football League in the USA) in order to provide a common set of rules and prevent players jumping from team to team in search of the biggest pay packet. The four original franchises (Canton Bulldogs, Akro Pros, Rock Island Independents and Dayton Triangles) invited the top teams from the New York Pro Football Circuit (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse), Pennsylvania and New York City / New Jersey Circuits to join them in forming the first true National Football League.

The League changed its name to the National Football League from APFA in 1922, and in 1932 after the League finished in a tie the first Championship Game was arranged after the season ended. Chicago Bears defeated the Portsmouth Spartans 9-0 to win the Championship. After this the decision was made to split the League into two divisions (Eastern and Western) with a pre-arranged Championship Game between the Division Winners.

The Champions of the APFA / NFL during these years were Akron Pros (1920), Chicago Staleys (1921), Canton Bulldogs (1922, 1923), Cleveland Bulldogs (1924), Chicago Cardinals (1925), Frankford Yellow Jackets (Philadelphia suburb) (1926), New York Giants (1927), Providence Steam Roller (1928), Green Bay Packers (1929-1931) and Chicago Bears (1932).
